Hey 2Coats! What do you do?

I have been asked several times in my visits and meetings with different people the question, "What does 2Coats do?" Being as consistent with our mission and vision as possible, here is my answer...

  1. Mission: to bridge the gap between those that have and those that need.
  2. Vision: to assist, organize, and direct individuals in sharing their time, talents, and gifts in order to compassionately engage them towards God and one another.
  3. We help with small home repairs and touchups including painting, brush clean up, general cleaning, "Spring Cleaning".
  4. We can help with moving.
  5. We give out free doughnuts and coffee at the mobile food pantry on the 4th Saturday of the month.
  6. We help to find new homes for couches, washers, dryers, we help make appliance exchange.
  7. We can help with finances, paying bills, financial education, bill management.

A Building

2Coats vision is to assist, organize and direct individuals in sharing time, talents, and gifts by compassionately engaging individuals towards God and one another. The potential for growth comes in many different areas of this organization. One area that would aid in growth would be the acquisition of a building, a point place from which we can organize, assist, and direct many individuals. Can we survive and last without a building, yes and we are doing a great job at this time doing so. This acquisition looks to the future development of the organization and its success in Grundy Center, Grundy county and beyond.

The story behind the building in Holland, Iowa. Earlier this year (2011) I had gotten a few calls from Gary Nibblink of The New Hope Fellowship in Holland. He expressed some concern that they would no longer be having services after the Easter holiday as their congregational numbers were becoming to low to support continuing services there. I did not have much of a desire to visit with him about the building at the time, wasn't quite sure if we had a use for it at the time. I did go visit with Gary and Clarence Henze at the building near the beginning of the lenten season with Jan Eberline and Stef Rohler. We sat and visited for a little bit of time. There wasn't much of a call at that time on my heart, and even after the meeting I didn't think this building would happen. It was to far from Grundy, needed work, and I didn't feel a desire to deal with the cost of the building or doing Sunday services there. I told Gary and Clarence that I would like to take the lenten season to think and pray. At the time I was also doing a 40+ day Daniel Fast and was hoping to find some discernment about the future of this building amongst other things. Nothing came. With a few weeks left in the fast until Easter, I got a call from Larry Doughn of the Colfax Center Church. He wanted to visit about the building, heard that 2Coats might be interested in using the building. We chatted a little bit over the phone, but did not get together and there wer several more weeks of time that passed without much thought of the building other than prayer. Then on June 12, I was at our Sunday service and was approached by a friend, Shelly Hovenga. She wanted to pray for me so we did. The following is what came through during that time of prayer...

People in need...something is in between them and me, like a wall or barrier...there is a noise...it is distracting them...I am to throw something to them but it seems so small..its ok that it is small though because it is from God...when its in the air it turns into fire and there are explosions of fruit when it hits the ground...there is a major source of white light, God's light exploding through the church in Holland...there is another door to go through, it is white, the handle was on the right...God says to go through it...he says, "You know my drumbeat, you beat the drum, learn to play it loud, He is going to give you drumsticks, you beat the drum...get their attention away from the distraction...

A few weeks later, I met Larry Doughn for lunch when I returned from Mexico. We discussed some vision and we planned to set up a meeting with The New Hope folks and Larry Hoop to discuss further the building when Larry D. returned from Rwanda, Africa. At this time I also got a phone message from Rick Nilles as he was looking to se if anything had been done with the building.

At that time I attended our annual SOS (Summer of Service) you conference at the Vineyard. After four days of intense risk taking teaching and practical application I was compelled to get the keys of the building and begin to lead anyone else interested in its use. I did so the following Friday in a meeting with Ken Lehew and Gary Nibblink of the New Hope Fellowship.

It is important to know that I did not discuss this decision with the 2Coats Board. I made this decision based on the above mentioned material.

And here we are. So where do we go? Here is a list of possibilities for the building...

  1. Volunteer Center
  2. Transitional Housing
  3. Youth Center
  4. Community Center
  5. Saturday Night Prayer Services
  6. Missions Center
  7. Bakery
  8. Garden and Canning Learning Center
  9. Orchard
  10. Wood Shop
  11. Special Meetings/Conference

Balance Beam

I came to know Jesus in 2007. It wasn't an instant change, more of a process for me. One of questioning, seeking, asking, and knocking on many doors. God captured my heart after 50+ weeks in two celebrate recovery programs, after many Sunday mornings at the Vineyard, after witnessing the energy of youth worshipping the Lord, after the prayers of many loved ones who saw deep into my heart and caught a glimpse of what God had in store.

I remember one of the first books I read as a new Christian was called, The Barbarian Way, by Erwin McManus. If you have read this book or would like to read through my notes (CLICK HERE), you will get a better sense of who I am in Christ and how I hope to go all out for God. The last two books I have read were titled Unstoppable Force and Hearing God's Whispers and Having the Guts to do Something about it. As I read through the stories of the Bible and through these titles, God continues to shape my heart to take risks, to challenge the normal, to avoid the boring and mediocre and to experience the great things that He has in store. Even at the Vineyard we hear over and over again about stepping out in F-A-I-T-H which we spell as R-I-S-K and vice versa.

I watch Francis Chan in this balance beam video (CLICK HERE) and I get so fired up!! It is with this fire that we will run 2Coats on all levels. I would love to walk the balance beam with you, supporting one another, taking risks, avoiding the boring and the mundane, cannon balling right into the center of where He needs us to be, inspiring lives with the gifts that he has given us, and getting set up in a front row seat to watch Him move in people.

The Story Behind Service

On November 28, 1994 I was a few days away from my 12th birthday. I was at a neighbor's house with a few friends and we were playing some video games. There was a pause in the video game and I turned to see what my friend was doing behind us. When I did there was a quick puff of air and instant pain. In an effort to shoot some air at me with his BB gun, my friend pulled the trigger and unloaded a bb and a pellet into my right eye. I lept onto the bed and soon did my best to run into the bathroom. I was instantly blind in my right eye and was rushed to the hospital. I would spend my 12th birthday there, going through a few surgeries that week, and several more in the months to follow. No progress. Loss of vision. Prosthesis.

Romans 8:28, He made good, even when I was a sinner. When I look back to those times I marvel at all of the help our family received. From receptionists who welcomed us for our daily office visits, to doctors who cancelled debts and were generous with their time, we were served well and unselfishly. I remember being laid up in the hospital, not being able to move, and having to be bathed by a nurse. I was totally helpless.

Moving deeper into my teen years I was able to understand exactly what those moments meant with regards to service and looking out for others, no matter what. As I came to know Jesus, I was impacted by the washing of the disciples feet in John 13. Service became part of who I was. By the time I traveled to Mexico as a senior in college, I was hooked and God began to unlock the Spiritual gift of service in me. I remember sitting on a hill in Mexico after our work week, feeling so complete after totally giving everything I had for five days.

And now, with 2Coats, service gets to be my job, my waking excitement, my life. I get to serve my wife and my kids, everyday plus the extra bonus to serve His children. I get to serve His people, those that are down, and out and lonely, and those that have everything this earth can offer but are missing out on His greatest gifts. I get to walk next to different people and hear their stories, let them know that someone is listening, and help them to be closer to Him. I want to share that love with you, that desire and passion I have with you.

I want to know why you serve. What is it inside of you that gets you moving in the morning to go wash someone else's dirty, mucky, calloused feet? I need to know how far you are willing to go, what risks you are willing to take. These are some of our defining moments in this organization.

It is important for you to know that I will give it all, and I mean everything, to serve the King and His people. I will do whatever it takes because I think that is what Jesus did, and that is what He taught his disciples to do. We are his disciples, we are his followers who have been commissioned to lay it all out for others. Reckless Obedience is what I am after, why I do what I do, and how I will lead this board.

It was a Beautiful Day

What a beautiful day this past Sunday as the rain went away and the kids of Grundy Center and Surrounding communities were able to run, toss and jump their hearts out in a Hershey's Track and Field Day Event.

2Coats was responsible for concessions. We had many volunteers that filled in all of the gaps prior to, during, and after the event. Thanks again to all who came out to help. These events are not possible unless we have volunteers like yourself! Well done and much appreciated!

Interested in flipping burgers or serving food, feeding souls?? Come out to one of our future events where we give away some food, make some new friends, share some smiles and spread God's love in a practical way!

"The best thing about helping at the track meet was knowing we can serve by
feeding people and in doing so we can be available to feed their souls as
well." ~JE

Mobile Food Pantry and Spring Cleaning

Thank you to all who helped this past Saturday at either or both the Mobile Food Pantry and the Spring cleaning that was done at the Senior Housing Complex. We had a great time, first at 9:00 meeting at my house. I was overjoyed to see all that showed up, I think 12-15 in total. My Spirit was uplifted after the Friday night service of darkness that I had attended.

We gathered up all of the supplies and put the coffee in the car and headed to Bethany Pres church. We arrived a little late, as folks who are looking to gather and receive some food arrive as soon as 8AM! We pulled up with some fire and set the coffee out and got to handing out some doughnuts. We had several folks help with the pantry itself. One of our team members, Gene Peebles, prayer warrior, started praying for folks as soon as he arrived. It was cool to see! We ended up giving away over 75 cups of coffee and all 5 dozen doughnuts that we ordered from Family Foods (thanks to them for helping us out).

10:30 rolled around real soon as we were off to the Senior Housing Complex to do some cleaning. It was there that we met up with several more friends and the cleaning was on. What a great job our helpers did, cleaning windows, scrubbing floors, taking out garbage. Most importantly, taking some time to visit, hangout with, and pray for our new friends. What a great time!

We will be heading out to the Senior complex real soon, and next month the Mobile Food Pantry will take place on the 4th saturday of the month, which I believe is the 28th. See you then!

We had a great time serving as a family. We loved giving out Easter baskets, allowing us to visit and pray with people. It was neat how people opened up about their lives and we were able to pray with them. One very sweet lady told us that she was scheduled for stomach surgery on May 11th, so we all joined hands and prayed with and over her. Another gentlemen when asked if there was anything we could pray for him and his wife - he said no thanks. We visited a little longer and before leaving asked if we could pray a prayer of blessing over the home and his family. He said sure and after praying he had thankful tears in his eyes. I believe Jesus touched his heart. It’s so neat to be able to love others with the love of Jesus and meet their physical needs by cleaning for them and their spiritual needs by talking and praying with them. Go 2 coats!!! Be the hands and feet of Jesus.

I just wanted to say that the day was very full of love an giving both on us that were giving an us that received. The thing that I think sticks out in my mind is the look on peoples faces when they asked how much for a cup of coffee an when they were told free they were surprised. Then came the smiles an the thanks an even hugs. Many told us Happy Easter or bless you an then just slowly walked away but would stop an look back an smile. I think out of the whole day was the smiles of just someone giving and not asking for anything in return. We not only warmed people with coffee but with unconditional caring for the next person.

If you would like to lean more about these folks and families and what you can do, we would need to have a personal contact. What a great opportunity to start to disciple these folks and help them to be closer to God!

Saturday Night CNP

Good day all...I hope this finds you well. Another great Night of Prayer this past Saturday night! Many attended. Thanks again to all of those who make food and desserts!

The Holy Spirit continues to move through this room and our hearts. The greatest miracle occurred, as a young man gave his life to Christ later that night. Praises to the one who saves us.

One final thought. I had been having Matthew 9:35-38 on my mind all week. I didn't get a chance to share with the group, but here are those verses...

35-38Then Jesus made a circuit of all the towns and villages. He taught in their meeting places, reported kingdom news, and healed their diseased bodies, healed their bruised and hurt lives. When he looked out over the crowds, his heart broke. So confused and aimless they were, like sheep with no shepherd. "What a huge harvest!" he said to his disciples. "How few workers! On your knees and pray for harvest hands!"

I pray that you continue to have your harvest hands ready...to be doing what the Father does, to seek things that he has blessed, to be aware of those who you come in contact with, reaching out to those in need.

Be well. See you soon.

I thought it would be a great time for a little February update...

A few dates to remember in February...Calendar of Events
  1. 5th: Community Night of Prayer at the Farm Bureau Insurance Building
  2. 19th: Grocery Bag Giveaway. Fill your grocery bags prior to and come join us at 10:00 on the 19th and pass out some bags out to those in our community and surrounding communities. We will be meeting at the Community Center at 10:00. See you there.
Thanks for taking the time to read the why, what and the how...please continue, yes you, to send ideas for the greater good of the cause. Creativity is bubbling inside of you. Remember our question...as you read, remember that God is in you...Genesis 1:27; So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. You have His creative abilities!

How can we engage this community and begin to bridge the gaps?

The What, The Why, The How = Your Creativity

Good day all,

I hope this finds you well, warm, and not needing to travel much. If so, I pray Psalm 119:105 for you, "
Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. I am currently reading a book called, "The Unstoppable Force", by Erwin McManus. He writes...

"Many leaders make the mistake of beginning with what rather than why, so the what is quickly rejected. Sometimes the reason we as leaders do this is because we've thought about the why so much that we think it's obvious to everyone...And so we begin the conversation with what needs to happen rather than with what has led us to this place. Once the why is clearly understood and embraced, the what can be received well..."

After reading this I felt led to again give you some insight to what is going on in my heart, mind, and soul when it comes to 2 Coats...

So Why 2 Coats?
Because I like/love/adore Jesus, and I want to become like Him...1 John 2:6 says,
Anyone who claims to be intimate with God ought to live the same kind of life Jesus lived.

Check this out...Click Here

Here's where you come in...McManus continues...

"We need to lead God's people to that place where the why is weighty and in their hearts--hearts that would cry out with the question, 'what then should we do?'...One the dominating question becomes how, creative juices begin to flow..."

The Spirit gave me these goals about a year and a half ago...this is the what
  1. to bridge the gap between those who have and those who need.
  2. to share the wealth, gifts, fruit and blessings God has put into our lives.
  3. to compassionately engage individuals towards God, one another, and their personal dreams.
It is important to understand, to know, to believe in your heart that these goals and ideas are not "what has led us to this place but what needs to happen."

When we begin to live like Jesus and carry out these ideas, we are going to find ourselves in many different places as we "put our life into the book (the Bible)". We are going to be uncomfortable, looked upon as radical, what we do may not make sense to us in this world, but then again many things that Jesus did, that he asked his disciples to do, DID NOT MAKE SENSE.

Check this out...Click Here

The what of 2 Coats is more than going to church on a Sunday. We are putting legs to the theology here. Your Mondays and Tuesdays and Wednesdays and Thursdays and...........they are going to look different.

As we "bridge the gaps" we are going to enter houses with several kids being warmed by the opening of the stove because their LP tank is empty because they don't have the money to fill it. We are going to travel to different communities and even countries, exploring the lives of the hurt, the lost, and the broken totally recreating our comfort zones to look more like that of Jesus and his disciples. We are going to step into the lives of single moms with newborns who are scared and lonely and afraid...

As we share our gifts, talents, time, resources, passions and experiences we are going to enter people's lives who don't know Jesus, His Father, or the power of the Spirit. What will you say to them when you look into their eyes and feel their brokenness and begin to share about yours and what God has done in your life?

What does it feel like.....to give 20%.....to allow someone to use your washer and dryer because theirs has broken.....to be embraced by a mom who didn't have anything to make lunch until you showed up at their door with a bag of groceries.....to sit with an elderly shut-in for twenty minutes and make their week?

When we compassionately engage others we are going to lay hands on them, pray in tongues, see healing happen in front of our eyes. Please know that we are Plan A here...we are the energy carriers...

An energy carrier is a person who refuses to allow apathy to take their life over... who refuses to live in mediocrity, who will not allow the average, mundane, the common and the ordinary to define or limit their life...and there is a world out there who desperately needs you to live at your highest level, who needs you to get up in the morning realizing that there is a God who created you and he longs to energize you to pour his love and power into his life so that you can become a conduit of his life to the world around you ...

~Erwin McManus

So, if you are here...that's a lot...but I hope I have clearly defined our reason for existing in Grundy Center and beyond.

In closing, I give this to you, with one question...

How can we engage this community and begin to bridge the gaps?

I am eagerly awaiting your response...

Steve Hinderhofer

January 1, 2011; Community Night of Prayer

I was watching The Chronicles of Narnia the past Saturday prior to heading down to the farm bureau insurance building. I love the part where Lucy is finally able to meet up with Aslan. She is exuberant with her energy as she tells Aslan that she new all along that he was there but that the others had doubted. Aslan answers, "Well then why didn't you come to me anyway." A powerful moment, even more so as we look inward and ask ourselves the same question of ourselves from God.

So with heavy thoughts, we headed down to the night of prayer, not knowing who would show, what the night be like, just knowing that God had called my heart to unite this community in harmony, and these nights of prayer would be a part of his plan.

The final story I shared on Saturday night was about Thomas, our one year old son. I am learning early that he is a sermon waiting to happen, I need only listen. This night, I was in the shower, and I heard Thomas thumping down the hallway of our old house. You can hear him coming all the way from the living room. He is just learning to walk so his steps are very heavy. Before I knew it he had pushed the door open and slung back the shower curtain and was looking up at me through the shampoo suds pouring over my face. I thought about the intimacy of this moment...how intimate are we with the Father, with the Son, with allowing the Holy Spirit to guide our lives...

Be the Change...Save a Life

Here are a few links I have come across in the last few days. The first is a link to an ABC 20/20 Special called, "Be the Change...Save a Life" that ran last Friday night. The other link is to the one they mention in the video called SaveOne.net

Be the Change
